Pages to Projects – September 2020

We are back with our next book for Pages to Projects to Go! Ricky Ricotta’s Mighty Robot is a friendship adventure story with fun dialogue and action by Captain Underpants and Dog Man author Dav Pilkey, and spectacular artwork by illustrator Dan Santat. The book provides an easy avenue for early readers to try out a ‘chapter book’ with its full-color illustrations, short chapters, and action-packed story.

Update 9/27: All books have been claimed. You can still borrow the book from the library and do the project along with it, though! Just fill out the form below to request the materials. You will receive an email when your materials are ready for pickup.

Project

In the story, a friendship forms between Ricky, a mouse who struggles with making friends and being bullied, and a mighty robot with a heart of gold (although he was designed by an evil scientist to destroy things). This month kids will design their own robots and decide what the robots are intended to do. To get their creative juices flowing there are two ways to start designing: first by playing a robot lab game where a roll of the die determines the shape of each part of a robot; and second by using legos and paint to print robot parts. Feel free to mix and match the two options to suit your child’s interests.

Here is what is included in this month’s project kit:

  • A copy of the robot lab packet
  • Selection of legos in different shapes and sizes
  • Black paint for printing

Have your child pick their favorite robot creation to share. Send a picture and description of the robot’s purpose to katies@lansinglibrary.org, and we will include their robot in our online gallery. Can’t wait to see the designs!

Keep Going!

  • Ricky Ricotta is a series of 12 books. Check them all out!
  • The Wild Robot is another fun robot series for more advanced readers. The two books are also great as read-alouds.
  • Dan Santat’s Sidekicks is a fun graphic novel with superhero animals and Santat’s engaging illustrations.
