Discover the timeless charm of Japanese kokeshi dolls—beautiful hand-carved wooden figures with over 150 years of tradition—in this special two-part workshop led by artist and anthropologist Annie Sheng.
Annie, who lived in Japan’s Tohoku region (the birthplace of kokeshi), will share insights into the cultural history and artistry of these beloved dolls. Participants will then design their own kokeshi-inspired character using watercolor, acrylic paint, or markers, and bring their creation to life with a short story or biography.
Finished pieces will be featured in a group exhibition at the Lansing Community Library Gallery before being returned to participants after the show.
This is a fun, creative experience for all ages—no prior art experience needed!
